Change Remains on the Horizon for Medicare Payment Policies for Organ Acquisition

For the second year in a row, the Centers for Medicare & Medicaid Services (CMS) is revising and clarifying its Medicare payment policies for organ acquisition costs. But one of the most significant potential changes—that is, changing the methodology by which an organ is counted as a “Medicare usable organ” for purposes of calculating Medicare’s share of the total allowable organ acquisition costs—is yet to come, likely in federal fiscal year (FY) 2024.
