Membership Structure
What membership levels does AHLA offer?
AHLA offers two membership levels: Premium/Comprehensive and Full/Basic Membership. Each level provides different benefits to meet your professional needs. For a detailed comparison of benefits by membership level, please visit our Membership Benefits and Pricing page.
Who is eligible for discounted pricing on membership?
Academicians, in-house counsel, paralegals, solo practitioners, and public sector professionals (local, state, or federal government) receive an additional discount off the Full/Basic membership level. For current pricing information, please see our Membership Benefits and Pricing page.
How are Practice Groups incorporated into a membership?
Access to one Practice Group is included with Full/Basic membership, while access to all Practice Groups is included with Premium/Comprehensive membership. To explore Practice Groups, visit the Practice Groups section of our website.
Does everyone at the firm, in-house department, or organization need to select the same membership level?
No. Each individual can select the membership level that best meets their professional needs.
Managing Your Membership
What is a member’s anniversary date?
An individual’s membership anniversary date is based on the month that one joins AHLA unless the firm or organization has a consolidated billing arrangement. For those members covered by a consolidated bill, the expiration date is aligned to match the month that the organization pays for everyone.
How can a member change their membership level?
Members can upgrade to a higher membership level at any time during the year by contacting AHLA or may wait until their membership renewal to change levels.
How can a member gain access to the Health Law Archive?
The Health Law Archive is included with Premium/Comprehensive membership.
How do Premium/Comprehensive membership benefits work?
Premium/Comprehensive members receive numerous additional benefits including free webinars and the Health Law Daily Podcast. For a complete list of benefits, please visit our Membership Benefits and Pricing page.
Premium/Comprehensive Members must opt-in to the Practice Groups they would like to join by logging into the AHLA website and visiting the My Membership page.
Student Membership
Can law students join AHLA?
Yes. Students without a JD degree can become student subscribers for up to three years while in active student status. For more information about student benefits, please visit our Student Membership page.
Community Resources
What is the Health Law Network?
The Health Law Network is AHLA's community platform for members and subscribers. It includes a collection of online discussion forums, resource sharing, and networking opportunities organized by topic area.
What is the Volunteer Town Square?
The Volunteer Town Square lists opportunities for members to contribute as speakers, writers, leaders, mentors, and more. Members can identify opportunities that match their interests, expertise, and availability.
What are Professional Networks?
AHLA’s offers several Professional Networks include Accessibility in Health Law, BIPOC in Health Law, Compliance Professionals, Early Career Professionals, LGBTQ+ in Health Law, Life Members, Solo Practitioners, and Advancing Women in Health Law. Members can subscribe to any networks at no additional cost and choose their preferred communication frequency.
Membership Categories
What are the member category definitions?
- Academician: Full-time faculty at a law or graduate school
- Attorney: Individual holding a JD degree and engaged in the practice of law, including counsel positions
- Health Law Professional: Legal professionals in compliance, regulatory, privacy, consulting, finance, administration, or practice management roles
- In-House Counsel: Attorney practicing in a hospital, health system, health plan, or health association setting
- Paralegal: Individual employed by a legal entity performing delegated substantive legal work
- Public Sector: Professinoals working in government, non-profit legal service, or public health organization
- Solo Practitioner: Lawyer practicing independently without other lawyers
- Student Subscriber: Full-time law or graduate student without a JD degree
