Much like her peers, Asha leverages AHLA's resources for professional growth, fostering educational advancement, and contributing significantly as a speaker and author. Her leadership and mentorship echo the core values of AHLA, making her a key figure in shaping the future of health law and inspiring others in the community.
My journey in health law began with a passion for medicine and science. Though I initially pursued a pre-med path, I realized my true calling was in healthcare policy and law. After working at a healthcare consulting firm and attending law school, I ventured into transactional law to specialize in health law. Throughout my career, I've represented diverse healthcare organizations, including nursing facilities, hospices, and payers. Joining Lane Powell in 1995, I co-founded the Senior Living & Long-Term Care Practice, marking a transformative phase.
I am presently the Director of the Health Law and Policy Program at the American University Washington College of Law and have been nominated to serve as AHLA Board President 2024-25. Every job opportunity has stretched me and made me into a better version of myself. There is such diversity in the health law profession and a breadth of things you can do to make an impact. I am dedicated to fostering and supporting the next generation of health law leaders and enjoy inspiring them to make an impact in this noble profession through dedicated hard work and innovative ideas.
Everything in my career has contributed to who I am today culminating into building blocks of different chapters in what I call my life book. The first couple of chapters in any life book are always pivotal, shaping the overall trajectory of one’s career. I am pleased with the direction my life’s path has taken me and I look forward to continual growth and progression into the future. I have been an AHLA cheerleader my entire career and believe that AHLA has been a pivotal part of my career growth and development. My career blossomed in part because of impactful AHLA leaders who fostered my engagement, nurtured my learning by introducing me to other professionals, and cultivated an environment of belonging.
My career, leadership, and commitment to education are intertwined, and AHLA has been a cornerstone of this journey. It's a nurturing ecosystem where knowledge thrives, individuals excel, and connections flourish. As the AHLA President for 2024-25, I am given opportunities to learn new skills and evolve! While this position comes with many challenges, I am excited for the challenges and opportunities ahead. I am encouraged by this wonderful community that fosters education and new learning, giving me a safe space to try and fail until I get it right.
