No Surprises Act: Good Faith Estimate for Self-Pay Patients

The No Surprises Act includes a requirement that health care providers and facilities provide uninsured patients with a good faith estimate of the costs of services that are scheduled in advance.[1] The purpose of the legislation, to help uninsured patients predict medical expenses, is commendable. However, the practical implementation of the requirement will have significant impact on how providers manage their own billing practices and interact with other providers in their community.
