OCR Reports Decline in HIPAA Breach Notices, But Increase in Compliance Complaints for 2021

Covered entities under the Health Insurance Portability and Accountability Act (HIPAA) reported 609 breaches of unsecured protected health information (PHI) affecting 500 or more individuals in 2021, a decrease of 7% from the number of breach notifications in 2020, the Department of Health and Human Services Office for Civil Rights (OCR) indicated in its annual report to Congress on Breaches of Unsecured Protected Health Information.
