The Provider Reimbursement Review Board Appeals Process: Still Moves Slowly After All These Years

In February of 1990, the United States General Accountability Office (GAO) issued a Briefing Report to the U.S. Senate entitled “Medicare Part A Reimbursements Processing of Appeals is Slow” assessing the inefficiency of the Provider Reimbursement Review Board (PRRB) (GAO Report.). In short, the GAO Report concluded that the PRRB’s “processing of cases was slow.” Review of the PRRB’s current caseload, procedure, and productivity indicates that, some 33 years later, that assessment, if not an understatement, remains accurate.
