AHLA Launches the Michael F. Anthony Health Law Scholarship Fund

  • December, 14, 2023

Washington, D.C. — AHLA proudly announces the establishment of the Michael F. Anthony Health Law Scholarship Fund, an initiative set to propel the next generation of health law leaders to new heights of accomplishment.

AHLA has long been committed to fostering the growth of health law professionals through education and mentorship. The Michael F. Anthony Health Law Scholarship Fund serves as an extension of this mission, providing a gateway for professionals to get involved in the dynamic landscape of health law.

“AHLA has for many years wanted to bring this scholarship fund to fruition," said David S. Cade, Chief Executive Officer of AHLA. “I am excited to see this dream become a reality as we better champion educational opportunities and growth for our community. As we look to the future, AHLA will continue to forge new paths for our members to access reliable resources.”

This fund was created to honor the life and legacy of a long-standing AHLA ambassador, Michael “Mike” Anthony. Anthony, a revered leader at the American Health Law Association since 1979, served as President in 1999-2000 and held key roles in various committees. A distinguished speaker and mentor, he was former Head of the International Health Law Department at McDermott Will & Emery and former Senior Vice President for Legal Affairs at the American Hospital Association. Recognized as an AHLA Fellow in 2005, Mike received the prestigious David J. Greenburg Service Award in 2006 for his exceptional leadership and loyalty. Mike passed away on September 7, 2023, at the age of 72, leaving an enduring legacy in health law.

Reflecting on this significant initiative, Patricia A. Markus, President of AHLA remarks, "The Michael F. Anthony Health Law Scholarship Fund exemplifies Mike’s and AHLA's shared dedication to education and mentoring. By encouraging emerging professionals to enter the ever-evolving field of health law, it also carries on Mike’s outstanding legacy of scholarship and service."

This new fund will support young professionals by offsetting the costs of program attendance at the Fundamentals of Health Law program, including registration fees, travel and lodging, and other resources. While the scholarship is not yet available as donations are cultivated to support the award, AHLA plans to make applications available for students to attend the 2024 Fundamentals of Health Law program.

AHLA invites potential donors to contribute to the fund. Your support will play a crucial role in bringing this initiative to fruition and empowering the next wave of health law pioneers. Explore opportunities on the scholarship webpage.

AHLA looks forward to the impact this scholarship fund will have on the future of health law and extends its gratitude to all supporters who have made this initiative possible. Stay tuned for future communications about the fund.
