Speaker Bureaus and Life Sciences Companies: The Good, the Bad and the Ugly

Speaker programs, easily delivered virtually in this time of COVID-19 and social distancing, continue to be essential elements in the education of physicians, nurse practitioners, and other professionals (collectively, “Prescribers”[1]). Speaker programs are provided by product manufacturers and distributors (“Life Sciences Company” or LSC) to deliver training and information about current treatments, advanced technologies, and new ways of treating certain identified disease states. The evolution of medicine is progressing at a rapid pace. Thus, it can be difficult for Prescribers to keep up with new treatments and protocols. Prescribers have limited time to learn about new medicines and treatments that may enhance and improve patient care. Speaker programs offer a solution to this problem through their flexible delivery methods. Whether delivered online, during lunch, at the close of the day, in the hospital, or in a physician’s office, speaker programs offer relevant and convenient content as Prescribers work to keep current on advancements in medicines and technology. Ultimately, the goal of speaker programs is to improve patient care by educating Prescribers about the benefits, risks, and appropriate uses of medicines and medical technology.
