OIG Flags Improper Schizophrenia Diagnoses in Nursing Home Residents to Mask Antipsychotic Drug Use

Some nursing homes are improperly diagnosing residents with schizophrenia so they can administer antipsychotic drugs without affecting the facility’s Medicare star rating, according to a Department of Health and Human Services Office of Inspector General (OIG) report issued March 19.
