OCR Investigating Michigan Health System for Alleged Noncompliance with Federal Conscience Protections

The Department of Health and Human Services Office for Civil Rights (OCR) is investigating a Michigan health system following allegations that one of its providers fired a medical professional who, citing her religious beliefs, refused to use pronouns that do not align with the patient’s sex and from assisting in certain trait modification procedures, the agency announced June 20.
