Medicare improperly paid suppliers for121 of 200 sampled durable medical equipment prosthetics, orthotics, and supplies (DMEPOS) items provided to hospice beneficiaries, the Department of Health and Human Services Office of Inspector General (OIG) said in a report released November 18. The Centers for Medicare & Medicaid Services (CMS) could have saved $116.9 million in payments from January 2015 through April 2019 and beneficiaries could have saved $29.8 million in deductibles and coinsurance if effective prepayment and post-payment edit processes were in place, the report said.
