Hospital price transparency has become an increasingly hot topic among policy makers. The rules governing health care coding and payment are byzantine and often confounding to patients, who struggle to understand their out-of-pocket costs for medical services. In recent years, federal and state policy makers have implemented a range of different approaches intended to enhance price transparency, which some policy makers believe will help reduce health care costs over time.
