OIG Allows Charitable Organization to Purchase and Forgive Medical Debt

A 501(c)(3) charitable organization’s proposal to purchase or receive donations of unpaid medical debt and then forgive that debt would not violate federal fraud and abuse laws, the Department of Health and Human Services Office of Inspector General (OIG) said in an advisory opinion posted July 24.
