Multi-hospital health systems have long promoted operational and clinical integration as a tool for improving quality and efficiency while decreasing undesirable variation and fragmented patient care. Since the passage of the Affordable Care Act, policymakers have supported incentives for value-based care and accountability for population health that seem to favor integrated delivery systems. Consolidating certain clinical services, support functions, or management across hospitals for greater efficiency and a consistent approach to strategy also appears to be an obvious way to gain efficiency from the perspective of business operations. For example, a health system might wish to appoint one person as the service line director of oncology or centralize its revenue cycle departments.
