The federal government has increasingly emphasized the importance of interoperability and health data sharing, with the Department of Health and Human Services (HHS) intensifying its focus on information blocking practices that impede access to electronic health information (EHI). Providers need to understand what the Health Insurance Portability and Accountability Act of 1996, as amended, and its implementing regulations (collectively, HIPAA), and state laws actually prohibit to ensure they do not accidently engage in information blocking.
