Medical bills can be one of the largest contributing factors to personal financial problems, including bankruptcy. Surprise medical bills—which occur when a person receives care from a provider that is not in the person’s insurance network—have historically been at the forefront of this problem because they occur without the consumer’s knowledge or choice. In most instances, this arises in emergency scenarios, but it can also occur when a person receives treatment at an in-network facility yet one or more of the treating providers, such as an anesthesiologist, is not in-network.
