Property Tax Exemptions—Buried in the Quagmire

Fifty states, fifty state codes, fifty different sets of requirements, and countless different interpretations by counties and municipalities. Property tax exemptions are one of the most valuable benefits to health systems across the country. But as property values and tax rates soar and government budgets shrink, they are an area fraught with more oversight by the governments whose budgets are reduced by these exemptions. The challenge for health systems is exacerbated by their expansion into new markets, acquiring for-profit hospitals, and owning and operating more real estate that is not located at the hospitals.
