The Occupational Safety and Health Administration (OSHA) has identified violence in health care settings as a significant occupational risk, and a new workplace violence standard for the health care industry could be on the horizon. If it acts to create a workplace violence standard for health care, federal OSHA will not be the first regulator to implement regulation concerning this workplace hazard. California OSHA has already adopted such a standard and Texas has developed, in Senate Bill 240, a law that will require health care providers to create workplace violence prevention programs.
