As the public health emergency (PHE) closes in on the one-year mark, government agencies have been re-examining and updating their approach on how best to provide relief to the health care provider and supplier community. The Centers for Medicare and Medicaid Services (CMS) is one such agency and recently revamped its individual 1135 waiver request submission process. On January 11, 2021, CMS launched a new web-based portal to help streamline health care provider and supplier individual 1135 waiver requests as well as other PHE related inquires typically received by the agency. The new portal’s design and submission process aims to resolve past frustrations the health care industry experienced with the original individual 1135 waiver request process at the start of the COVID-19 pandemic.
