About the Training

Since the No Surprises Act took effect, the federal IDR process has become one of the most active areas of payment dispute resolution in health care, and certified IDR entities need decision-makers who can work through it with confidence and consistency.

Presented by AHLA and Blue Mountain Law, this two-day virtual training gives arbitrators, reviewers, and IDR entity staff a practical grounding in the full process, from eligibility through the written payment determination. Participants will learn how surprise billing protections and network contracting shape the disputes that reach IDR, how to assess jurisdictional and procedural eligibility, and how to read EOBs, coding, and modifiers to understand the items and services in dispute. The program then turns to the core of the arbitrator’s work: understanding the qualifying payment amount, weighing permissible information while setting aside prohibited factors, and drafting clear, well-supported written determinations. Sessions on conflict-of-interest requirements, ethics, and overcoming unconscious bias round out the curriculum, and hands-on group exercises built around hypothetical case files let participants apply each skill in real time.
