Gregory E. Demske

Professional Career

Greg Demske is a partner in Goodwin Procter’s Litigation and Health Care practices in Washington, DC. Prior to joining Goodwin, he was an attorney at HHS OIG for 32 years, including serving as Chief Counsel to the Inspector General 2012-2022. Greg led all of OIG’s civil and administrative enforcement efforts, coordination with the Department of Justice on False Claims Act cases, interpretation of the Anti-Kickback Statute, and guidance to the industry on compliance. After decades of leadership and engagement in government enforcement, Greg has a deep understanding of how the government interprets and enforces the Anti-Kickback Statute, the False Claims Act, and other fraud remedies and he guides clients on advancing voluntary compliance as well as responding to issues, investigations, and government enforcement cases.

AHLA Achievements

Greg has been an active educator and speaker at AHLA in-person and virtual conferences, webinars, podcasts, and other forums for decades. He joined AHLA in 2009. He served on the Board of Directors of AHLA from 2017-2023. As a Board member, he chaired the Membership-IDEA Committee that advanced the IDEA Action Plan and its focus on communications, culture, volunteer/leadership pipeline, and community; leveraged the launch of the Association’s reimagined awards and recognition program; and provided strategic oversight of the growing membership concierge program.

Hal McCard

Professional Career

Hal McCard is Counsel with the law firm Spencer Fane, LLP in Nashville, TN. His legal career spans over three decades designing and implementing legal solutions for health systems, hospitals, physician group practices, and ancillary/allied health care providers. He has served as General Counsel to not-for-profit, private equity-backed and publicly traded health systems, providing strategic legal advice to their Boards and management. Over the course of his career, he has led legal teams through major health system mergers and acquisitions and complex state and federal regulatory compliance challenges including fraud and abuse, licensing and contracting, physician relations, and transactions.

AHLA Achievements

Hal joined AHLA in 1989. He served as Chair of the Hospitals and Health Systems Practice Group from 2012-2015. He served on the Board of Directors of AHLA from 2016-2022. As a Board member, he chaired the Practice Groups and Special Councils Committee and focused on streamlining the structure for content-generating groups, providing online tools for leaders to establish and monitor their annual plan of work, and operationalizing an evaluation tool. Hal is an educator, author, and frequent speaker at AHLA’s in-person conferences.

Cynthia (Cindy) Y. Reisz

Professional Career

Cynthia Y. Reisz is a member of Bass Berry & Sims. Cindy is well respected for her transactional and operational experience. Her extensive knowledge of the health care industry and its regulatory framework allows her to advise clients on structuring acquisitions and joint ventures, as well as de novo development of facilities and healthcare services. Cindy utilizes her experience in both the health care and corporate sectors to advise private equity funds and their portfolio companies.

Over the course of her career, she has worked primarily with acute care and behavioral health systems, physician practices and their affiliated management companies and value-based care organizations, among others in her practice. Her involvement with industry-related organizations and her experience in application of the fraud and abuse, physician self-referral, corporate practice of medicine and other federal and state laws allow her to provide valuable and efficient guidance for her clients.

AHLA Achievements

Cindy joined AHLA in 1995. She served on the Board of Directors of AHLA and was the President from 2021-2022. She served as President during the ongoing challenges from the COVID-19 pandemic and contributed significantly to the development of the Association’s 2023-2025 Strategic Plan. She also championed AHLA to be a positive contributor to the dialogue on racial and other inequities in health care and potential solutions.

Cindy served as Vice Chair and Chair of the Physician Organizations Practice Group and chaired the Program Planning Committee for the Physician Organizations Law Institute. As a Board member, Cindy chaired numerous committees, including the Practice Groups Committee where she focused efforts on assisting with practice group operations, as well as the creation of webinars and written materials relevant to the specific practice groups. Cindy is a frequent writer in AHLA publications and speaker at AHLA events.

S. Craig Holden

Professional Career

S. Craig Holden is senior counsel at Baker Donelson. He previously was Chair/CEO of the Ober Kaler firm and also served as chair of Baker Donelson’s Health Law Group. He represents clients in all areas of the health care industry, advising clients on Medicare and Medicaid fraud and abuse issues, Medicare and other third-party reimbursement issues and general compliance matters. He also serves as a mediator in health law disputes through AHLA’s Dispute Resolution Service. Over the course of his career, Craig has represented numerous health care providers in high-profile resolutions of False Claims Act investigations involving allegations of billing fraud, as well as Stark and Anti-kickback violations. He has resolved numerous Stark and Anti-kickback issues through the CMS and OIG self-disclosure protocols. He has also served as the OIG-approved Independent Review Organization under several Corporate Integrity Agreements.

AHLA Achievements

Craig joined AHLA in 1987. He chaired the Program Planning Committee for the Fraud and Compliance Forum and subsequently served on the Board of Directors of AHLA. He was the President from 2020-2021, during the COVID-19 pandemic which presented unprecedented challenges to the Association’s in-person conference business model. He also championed AHLA to be a positive contributor to the dialogue on racial and other inequities in health care and potential solutions. As a Board member, Craig chaired numerous committees including the Governance Committee where he worked to change and strengthen the Association’s governance structure and policies. Joanne R. Lax

Professional Career

Joanne R. Lax is a retired member of the law firm Dykema Gossett PLLC where she represented health systems, hospitals, prepaid in-patient health plans, nursing homes, homes for the aged, assisted living facilities, hospices and home health agencies regarding state and federal regulatory compliance. She also devoted time to the legal aspects of assisted reproductive technology, on behalf of both the medical providers of that technology and the individuals using it to become parents.  Joanne served as the Chair of her State Bar's Health Care Law Section. In addition, she served on the Legal Committee of LeadingAge, a trade association for non-profit long-term care facilities, as well as chairing the State Bar of Michigan’s Health Law Section. 

As an attorney who is visually impaired, Joanne has been a trailblazer in championing inclusion. She has been a steadfast advocate for underserved populations throughout her legal career, representing diverse individuals in need of end-of-life care, those with disabilities, and LGBTQ+ couples seeking to become parents. Her commitment to equity and eliminating disparities is evident in her representation and advocacy for those seeking access to equal opportunities and resources. Joanne was also the recipient of several honors during her practice years, including Best Lawyer and Super Lawyer.

AHLA Achievements

Joanne joined AHLA in 2001. She served as Chair of the PALS Practice Group and served on the Board of Directors of AHLA from 2016-2022. She demonstrated an unwavering commitment to promoting inclusion, diversity, equity, and accessibility (IDEA) throughout her extensive service to the Association. She served as Chair of the Membership-IDEA Committee from 2020-2022, playing a pivotal role in reimagining AHLA's Awards and Recognition Program to enhance openness and inclusivity. Under her leadership, AHLA collaborated with specialty bar associations, fostering unity and representation within the legal community. Joanne is the recipient of AHLA's first IDEA Champion Award.

Robert A. Pelaia

Professional Career

Robert A. Pelaia is Deputy General Counsel at the University of South Florida after 18 years with the Office of the General Counsel at the University of Florida where he served as the Senior University Counsel for Health Affairs. He provides a wide range of legal support services for USF Health. Robert is certified as a Health Care Law Specialist by the Florida Bar Board of Legal Specialization and Education. He also is certified as a Professional Coder and a Professional Compliance Officer by the American Academy of Professional Coders.

Robert began his legal career with two large Washington, D.C. law firms where he represented health care providers on an array of health regulatory matters arising under Medicare, Medicaid and other third-party payment programs. In addition, he provided legal counseling in the areas of federal and state fraud and abuse matters, including issues of anti-kickback, self-referral and false claims. His areas of practice include Compliance, Conflicts of Interest, Contracts, Corporate Matters, Ethics, Health-HIPAA, Health Law, Liability Issues, Medical Residency, Open Meetings Law, Public Records, Research Matters, Student Records (FERPA), Subpoenas.

Robert joined AHLA in 1995. He served on the Association’s Quality Council for three years and then served as a member of the Fundamentals of Health Law program planning committee from 2012-2016 before becoming the co-chair in 2016-2017. He has authored several editions of the AHLA publication titled What is a Compliance Program and spoken frequently at the Association’s in-person programs.

Lawrence W. Vernaglia

Professional Career

Lawrence W. Vernaglia is an equity partner at his firm, Foley & Lardner and has three decades of experience representing hospitals, health systems, academic medical centers, and a variety of other health care providers. His practice involves regulatory and transactional matters, including Medicare/Medicaid reimbursement compliance advice and appeals; mergers, acquisitions, and financings; state regulatory issues, fraud and abuse/Stark law analyses; managed care contracting; and general corporate and business planning in health care. Larry is also the department chair for the firm’s Industry Teams Department, responsible for overall strategy and leadership across all industry teams. Prior to that, he served for eight years as chair of the firm’s Health Care Industry Team. Larry is a board member of the firm’s Federal PAC and is a member of its Partner Selection Committee. Larry serves as outside policy counsel for the Massachusetts Health & Hospital Association and runs strategic planning programs for senior management and governing boards. A lecturer at Boston University’s School of Law and a frequent contributor to national health care conferences and publications, Larry is committed to encouraging the next generation of health care lawyers. He is a member of the bars of Massachusetts, New Hampshire, and New York.

Larry joined AHLA in 1992. He served as a member of the Institute on Medicare and Medicaid Issues program planning committee from 2013-2018 and is a frequent educator and speaker at AHLA’s in-person programs. Larry has also been a contributor to the Association’s publications and is a member of the Dispute Resolution Service.

Timothy B. Adelman

Professional Career

Timothy B. Adelman is general counsel and chief legal officer for Luminis Health. He comes to Luminis Health from Hall, Render, Killian, Heath and Lyman, P.C., the largest law firm focused exclusively on healthcare law in the United States, where he served as managing partner. A nationally recognized leader in the health-law industry, Tim also served on the Anne Arundel Medical Center (AAMC) Foundation Board of Directors. A contributing author of the Hearing Officer's Guidebook and author of its 2010 supplement, Tim is frequently asked to present around the country on issues relating to credentialing, peer review and regulatory compliance.

AHLA Achievements

Tim joined AHLA in 2003. He served as a Vice Chair and Chair of the Medical Staff, Credentialing, and Peer Review from 2007-2013. He served on the Board of Directors for AHLA from 2013 to 2019. In addition, Tim served as chair of the Association’s 2030 Task Force in 2019-2020 to look at the evolution of the health care industry. He chaired the Membership Committee and has served on the Executive, Finance, Membership, Nominating, Programs, and Practice Group Committees. Tim has been a speaker at AHLA programs and contributing author and is currently serving on the planning committee for the 2023 Annual Meeting.

Alan D. Bloom

Professional Career

Alan D. Bloom is a part-time consultant and a retired attorney. He was a founder and officer of the National Association of HMO Regulators and made many presentations to professional associations. He has published extensively in journals and in other publications. Alan taught at Whittier College of Law and at the University of Southern California. He lives in Manhattan Beach, CA

AHLA Achievements

Alan joined AHLA in 1975. When AHLA started, it was an organization publishing a newsletter and a summary of cases with a few educational programs. He was involved as it reorganized and became a real professional association. He was a Board member and President of the National Health Lawyers Association (NHLA) in 1983. Alan served as a vice chair and chair of the Health Care Liability and Litigation Practice Group. He has spoken at numerous educational programs, chaired and planned conferences, served on many Board committees, and was a moderator on two listserves.

Mark A. Bonanno

Professional Career

Mark A. Bonanno is General Counsel and Vice President of Health Policy at Oregon Medical Association. He provides general legal guidance for board of trustees and corporation management, oversight and supervision of Medical-Legal Department, development of health care compliance resources for members, support for legislative team, and monitoring of health care legal developments. As part of leadership transition team in 2015, oversaw series of leadership and staffing changes, review of all functions of the organization and its affiliated businesses. Part of national legal team in the 2019 federal case of AMA v. Azar challenging administrative rule changes in Title X Family Planning Program. A dedicated member of his association’s COVID-19 response team since March 2020. Prior to his service with the OMA, he was in private practice for a local health law firm and then in a sole health law practice for over 14 years. He currently serves on the board of directors for the American Society of Medical Association Counsel as well as the Cascade Employers Association.

AHLA Achievements

Mark joined AHLA in 1995. He served on the Board of Directors for AHLA from 2015-2021. During his tenure on the Board, Mark advocated for (1) policy change and training of leadership as part of early ad hoc and then permanent Governance Committee work plans that all had DEI policy embedded in them; and (2) as an individual member mentoring new AHLA members who were part of the diverse communities and encouraging those members to seek leadership roles.  Mark served as chair of the Governance Committee and as a member of the Executive, Education, and Governance, Membership, Nominating, Practice Group, Programs, and Professional Resources, Committees, as well as the Ad Hoc Governance, Annual Meeting Program Planning and Technology Committees. He served as a Vice Chair and Chair of the Fraud and Abuse Practice Group. He was a recipient of the Patricia T. Meador Leadership Award. Mark has also been a frequent educator at AHLA events.

Marilyn Lamar

Professional Career

Marilyn Lamar is a principal at her firm Liss & Lamar, P.C. with more than twenty years of experience in corporate information technology, and digital health law, including the HIPAA Privacy and Security Rules, the Information Blocking Rule, TEFCA, SaaS agreements, electronic health record (EHR) agreements, health information exchanges (HIEs), data use agreements, software development, artificial intelligence, and cloud computing. Her practice includes a broad range of regulatory advice, licensing, outsourcing, and other technology transactions on behalf of hospitals, health plans, HIEs, hospices, and technology companies. Marilyn is also a member of the Illinois Association of Healthcare Attorneys, and HIMSS (Health Information Management Systems Society).

Marilyn joined AHLA in 1997. She served on the Board of Directors for AHLA and was the President from 2018-2019. Kim Harvey Looney

Professional Career

Kim Harvey Looney is a partner at her firm K&L Gates LLP and is a member of the Health Care and FDA practice group. Kim regularly works with health care clients on operational issues such as licensing, state matters, Medicare certification and reimbursement, reimbursement audits, integrated delivery systems, contracts, corporate governance, CON applications and hearings, and recruitment and employment. She also has significant experience advising clients on complex Stark and federal Anti-Kickback regulations, as well as compliance issues related to Medicare and Medicaid fraud and abuse.

Kim joined AHLA in 1989. She served on the Board of Directors for AHLA from 2015-2021. As chair of the Membership, Diversity+Inclusion Committee, Kim led in its efforts to grow the Association’s membership and to expand its focus on inclusion, diversity, equity, and accessibility initiatives. Kim also was the chair of the Development and Advancement Council and as a member of the Fundraising Task Force where she participated in the review and analysis of the development program and helped advance and promote the Association’s fundraising efforts. Kim is a strong contributor to AHLA’s publications, and a frequent educator and speaker.

Claire F. Miley

Professional Career

Claire F. Miley is retired from Bass, Berry & Sims, where she was a senior partner in healthcare regulatory and transaction law. She garnered numerous honors for her healthcare legal work, including recognition in Best Lawyers in America® and Chambers USA®.  She co-led the firm’s LGBTQ+ affinity group and was the most senior attorney in the affinity group. She represented the firm at the annual Human Rights Campaign (HRC) dinner in Nashville, at “Pride Night” at the Nashville Predators, and at other diversity events hosted by the firm. Claire consulted with the firm’s diversity coordinator on best practices for the firm’s LGBT affinity group and assisted the firm in 2017 in achieving a perfect score of 100 percent for the HRC Foundation’s 2018 Corporate Equality Index. Claire was a member of Nashville in Harmony, an openly LGBTQ+ choir in Nashville, for fourteen years, during two of which she served as President of the Board of Directors.

Claire joined AHLA in 1997. During her term as Chair of the Regulation, Accreditation and Payment (RAP) practice group, and as an openly LGBTQ+ Chair of an AHLA practice group, she actively sought diverse speakers for RAP publishing and speaking opportunities. In addition, Claire authored dozens of RAP practice group e-mail alerts and shepherded the publication of the quarterly RAP sheets, including publishing a Chair’s column for each issue. She was also involved in the RAP Practice Group’s “Year in Review” presentation for several years at the Institute for Medicare and Medicaid Payment Issues (MMI).

Robert R. Niccolini

Professional Career

Rob Niccolini is a shareholder at Ogletree Deakins in Washington, D.C. He served as the co-chair of his firm’s Healthcare Industry Group for almost a decade, and is proud to be the first labor and employment lawyer to have served as President of the American Health Law Association. He represents management in employment litigation and labor disputes, with special experience in the healthcare, technology, insurance, and government contracting industries. His practice includes all facets of employment discrimination, harassment, wage and hour, ADA, FMLA, covenants not to compete and employment torts, as well as labor arbitration, union campaigns and unfair labor practice proceedings.

AHLA Achievements

Rob joined AHLA in 2003, and served as Chair of the Labor and Employment Practice Group from 2007-2010.  He served on the Board of Directors of AHLA and was the President from 2019-2020. As President, Rob helped oversee the integration of the new Board governance and committee structure, as well as the Association’s name change to better serve all health law professionals, and worked to assess anticipated changes in the health law industry over the next decade with formation of the AHLA 2030 Task Force. As a Board member, Rob co-chaired the Diversity+Inclusion Council where he worked to advance and incorporate D+I into the fabric of the Association’s speaking, writing, and publishing activities by creating one of the first D+I Strategic Plans. He also helped shepherd changes to the structure of the D+I Council; and commenced the speaker diversity project. Rob is a frequent educator and speaker at AHLA events.

Claire M. Turcotte

Professional Career

Claire M. Turcotte is the Director of Legal Services, Special Counsel at Premier Health. She is the corporate and regulatory counsel for new strategic business development and value-based initiatives. She is also corporate counsel for Laboratory affiliate, and regulatory counsel for reimbursement; health information including information blocking. Claire is currently the co-chair of the Cincinnati Health Collaborative Data Governance, Legal Committee (which reviews and approves requests from Southwest Ohio organizations to access Health Information Exchange data).

Claire joined AHLA in 1993. She has served in several leadership roles including as a member of the OIG Advisory Opinions Task Force, and the Fraud and Abuse Practice Group. Claire was a vice chair of the Hospitals and Health Systems Practice Group, a member of the Women’s Leadership Council (inaugural Council), and a member of the Quality Council. Claire is a contributor to AHLA’s publications and has spoken at in-person programs and webinars.

James (Jim) W. Boswell III

Professional Career

Jim Boswell is the Team Leader of King & Spalding's national Healthcare Team. His practice is devoted to handling litigation and investigations on behalf of health care industry clients. Jim has expertise in handling managed care litigation and has also served as counsel in False Claims Act lawsuits in multiple states. An experienced health care litigator, Jim regularly handles jury trials, administrative hearings, arbitrations, and appellate arguments regarding specialized health care issues. He joined King & Spalding in 1992 after clerking on the United States Court of Appeals for the Fifth Circuit and became a partner of the firm in 1999.

Jim joined AHLA in 2005. He served as a Vice Chair and then Chair of the Healthcare Liability & Litigation Practice Group from 2006-2012. He served on the Board of Directors for AHLA from 2013 to 2018 and served as the Board liaison to the Dispute Resolution Council. Lisa A. Hathaway

Professional Career

Lisa Hathaway is Aetna’s Chief Medicare Counsel. Lisa is responsible for all the legal support for Aetna's Medicare area for Parts C and D, which includes strategic planning and providing guidance regarding pending and new legislation and CMS regulations effecting Medicare. She has expertise in complex contracting, value-based arrangements, medical loss ratios, and with delegated services. She also understands the provider side from her past experiences as Assistant General Counsel for Florida Blue; National Director of Managed Care Contracting for HCR ManorCare.

Lisa joined AHLA in 1992. She served on the Association’s Board of Directors from 2011 to 2017. She served on the Membership, Practice Groups, Professional Resources, Programs, and Public Interest Committees. She served six years as a Co-Chair of the Institute for Health Plan Counsel program planning committee from 2015-2021, and as a member from 2012-2014. In addition, Lisa served as Vice Chair and then Chair of the Payers, Plans, and Managed Care Practice Group in 2006-2008 and 2008-2011, respectively, and as Vice Chair of the HMOs and Health Plans Practice Group from 2002-2006. She has mentored many members over the years, which has led to greater engagement and often leadership roles in the Association. Lisa has been a frequent speaker at AHLA programs, including the In-House Counsel Program, Annual Meeting, Institute on Medicare & Medicaid Payment Issues, Long Term Care and the Law, and Payers, Plans and Managed Care Institute.

Elizabeth E. Hogue

Professional Career

Elizabeth Hogue has been in private practice for over 40 years. She has specialized in home health, HME, IV infusion, private duty and hospice providers, managed care organizations, hospitals, long term care facilities, life care communities, physicians, professional associations of healthcare providers, case managers and individual practitioners. She has also been involved with the Developmental Disabilities Law Project at the University of Maryland School of Law.

AHLA Achievements

Elizabeth joined in 1976 as a law student when the organization was called the National Health Lawyers Association. She has and continues to serve as a mentor to multiple AHLA members. Elizabeth served on a Task Force for and was instrumental in helping to establish the life member initiative in 2013; served on the Life Members Council; and continues to serve as the Moderator of the Life Members Network and has done so since its inception. She has served on the Publications Committee in 1986, Quality Council in 2018, and Fundraising Task Force in 2021. She is a prolific speaker and author.

Kenneth (Ken) R. Marcus

Professional Career

Ken Marcus is a partner at Honigman and has practiced exclusively in health care law for 38 years. He has extensive experience in corporate, payment, regulatory and compliance matters. He is recognized as a national expert in Medicare provider appeals procedure, with extensive experience representing hospitals before the Provider Reimbursement Review Board and the federal courts. He also has substantial experience as a transactional lawyer, representing clients in major business transactions and advising clients in matters involving the Medicare and Medicaid Anti-fraud and Abuse Provisions, the Stark Act, and the Federal False Claims Act.

Ken joined AHLA in 1997. He has extensive speaking and writing experience. He served as the Vice Chair of the Regulation, Accreditation, and Payment Practice Group. He was also involved in the conception and establishment of the Life Members Community for the Association.

Myra C. Selby

Professional Career

Myra Selby is a Partner at IceMiller in Indianapolis, IN, where she has a broad-based practice with a focus in the areas of corporate internal investigations, appellate practice, compliance counseling, complex litigation, risk management, strategic and other legal advice, across various industry sectors. She serves in the role of advisor for large institutional clients as well as individuals. She is a trained and experienced commercial mediator and arbitrator. She is a former associate justice of the Indiana Supreme Court. Myra has the distinction of being both the first woman and the first African American to serve as an associate justice on the Indiana Supreme Court. In 1999, the Indiana Supreme Court appointed her to chair its Commission on Race and Gender Fairness. The commission is charged with ensuring fairness and diversity in the legal system. She continues her tradition of service to the commission as a current member. Prior to her appointment to the Court, Myra was director of health care policy for the state of Indiana, where she was responsible for policy development and the execution of state health care programs, including Medicaid managed care.

AHLA Achievements

Myra joined the Association in 2006. She served on the AHLA Board of Directors from 2004 to 2010. She served on the Executive, Finance, and Nominating Committees for the Association. She also served as Chair of the Dispute Resolution Service Review Board from 2013 to 2017 and served on the Annual Meeting Program Planning Committee from 2019 to 2020. She has been a speaker for AHLA, written for the Journal of Health and Life Sciences Law, and participated in AHLA’s Convener on Racial Disparities in Health Care.

Toby G. Singer

Professional Career

Toby Singer is a retired partner of the global law firm, Jones Day. She is an authority on mergers and other antitrust matters in the health care industry, and her practice focused on antitrust counseling and litigation for health care clients. She represented providers and payers on a wide variety of antitrust issues, from mergers and acquisitions and other transactions to less formal alliances among competitors as well as counseling on conduct issues. She handled numerous federal and state government investigations and defended clients in both government and private antitrust litigation. Prior to joining Jones Day, Toby served as a deputy assistant director for the health care section of the Bureau of Competition of the Federal Trade Commission.

AHLA Achievements

Toby joined AHLA in 1986 when it was still called the National Health Lawyers Association. She served on the Board of Director from 2013 to 2019. Her tenure on the Board included service on the Executive Committee and chairing the Publications Committee. Toby also served as Vice Chair and Chair of the Antitrust Practice Group, in 2001-2006 and 2006-2010 respectively, and was a member of the Quality Council. She served as Chair on the Fundraising Task Force and as a member of the Development and Advancement Council. In addition, Toby served on several AHLA program planning committees, including the Annual Meeting and Antitrust Program. She wrote a chapter for AHLA’s ACO Handbook and for the Journal of Health & Life Sciences Law as well as multiple publications for the Antitrust Practice Group. She has been a frequent speaker, including at AHLA’s In-House Counsel Program and Annual Meeting, as well as the Physicians & Hospitals Law Institute and the Antitrust in Healthcare program.

Eric Zimmerman

Professional Career

Eric Zimmerman is a recognized Medicare law and policy authority and registered lobbyist who represents clients before Congress and administrative agencies, and helps clients navigate federal legislative and regulatory processes related to Medicare coverage, coding, reimbursement, and compliance. He primarily counsels and represents hospitals and health systems, ambulatory surgery centers, clinical laboratories, pharmaceutical, biotechnology and device manufacturers and suppliers, medical trade associations and professional societies. Eric is the global head of McDermott’s Health Practice. He also serves as a principal of McDermott+Consulting LLC, McDermott’s integrated health-focused policy, lobbying and data analytics consultancy.

Eric joined the Association in 1997. He is a Past President of AHLA and served on its Board from 2008 to 2019. During his tenure, he served as Chair of the Executive, Finance, Programs, Nominating, and Professional Resources Committees and on the Membership and Practice Groups Committees. He served as Vice Chair and then Chair of the Regulation Accreditation and Payment Practice Group in 2001-2004 and 2004-2007, respectively. Eric also served on the Medicare Part D Task Force and as Chair of the Certification Exploratory Council. He has been a frequent speaker, including at the Institute on Medicare and Medicaid Payment Issues, Hospitals and Health Systems and Transactions Programs, Annual Meeting, and webinars. He was an Editor of Federal Health Care Laws and Regulations as well as Medicare Law, 2d Edition. He has also written nearly a dozen articles appearing in various AHLA publications, including The RAP Sheet, the publication of the Regulation, Accreditation and Payment Practice Group, Health Lawyers Weekly, and for the AHLA Public Information Series.
