As cybersecurity incidents and data breaches continue to rise in the health care sector, Health Insurance Portability and Accountability Act (HIPAA) covered entities and business associates are at increased risk for costly investigations (which often identify areas of non-compliance with the HIPAA Security Rule), enforcement actions, and penalties related to these incidents. Improving cybersecurity and implementing recognized security practices can help prevent and mitigate some of the risks associated with these incidents, especially considering recent guidance from the U.S. Department of Health and Human Services Office for Civil Rights (OCR).
