Membership applications are processed upon receipt. Once approved, you will receive an emailed receipt and gain access to members-only content. If you join online and your payment is processed successfully, you will have immediate access to members-only content.

How do I enroll in a Practice Group?
You must be a current AHLA member to join a Practice Group. AHLA offers 17 Practice Groups, each connecting professionals who share similar work settings or focus areas within health law. Practice Groups provide access to a Topical Library of Resources and publications created by member volunteers, supporting members in researching laws and statutes, drafting legal documents and contracts, and advising clients — including toolkits, 50-state surveys, and practice-specific guidance documents.

What is the AHLA Mentoring Program?
The AHLA Mentoring Program assists attorneys and other health law professionals at different stages of their careers to network and build professional relationships, promote leadership and professional development, identify career planning opportunities, and receive guidance about navigating their career journey. Mentorship through the program can lead to increased collaboration, skills development, goal setting, a sense of belonging, personal growth, and advocacy.
Who is eligible to participate in the AHLA Mentoring Program?
Any current AHLA member may participate. Mentees may be new to the practice of health law, transitioning between practice settings (such as moving to or from an in-house, government, private practice, or academic role), or experienced practitioners who want a trusted colleague to help navigate a specific career challenge.
How are mentors and mentees matched?
AHLA uses an online portal within the Health Law Network, which enables members to browse potential matches based on practice or work setting, specialties and areas of focus, geographic location, and mentoring topics. The software generates suggested matches based on profile comparisons. Because mentoring is a mutual relationship, both the mentor and the mentee must agree before a pairing is confirmed.
How long does a mentoring partnership last?
Partnerships are typically established for one year, though the specific duration is mutually agreed upon by the mentor and mentee at the outset of the relationship.
How often do mentors and mentees connect?
Most pairs connect on a scheduled basis — typically once a month — and remain available for ad hoc conversations as needed. The frequency and format of interactions are determined by the pair based on mutual availability and preference.
Can mentoring interactions take place virtually?
Yes. Interactions can occur in person, by phone, or through other electronic means. Geography and individual preference determine the best approach for each pair.
What is the Mentoring Community?
The Mentoring Community is an online space for those enrolled in the Mentoring Program to connect and share their experiences, tools, and resources.
What are the responsibilities of program participants?
Mentors and mentees must agree to AHLA's Code of Conduct, confirm acceptance of the program's requirements, and connect with one another regularly.
What topics are appropriate for mentoring conversations?
Mentoring conversations focus on professional development, career navigation, goal setting, and networking. A mentor serves as a conduit to resources on substantive law topics — not as a tutor on specific legal matters. Additionally, participation in the Program is not meant to serve as an avenue for job searches. Both parties should avoid discussing specific legal cases they are handling due to confidentiality and conflicts of interest concerns.
Will my mentoring conversations stay private?
Yes. Mentors and mentees are expected to maintain the confidentiality of their discussions unless both parties agree otherwise.
Is the AHLA Mentoring Program meant to replace my organization's mentoring program?
No. The AHLA Mentoring Program is designed to complement — not replace or interfere with — any mentoring programs already available through your employer or other professional affiliations.
