Health Law Week 2021

About

With the landscape continuing to shift around delivery of care in the United States health care system, and the spotlight the COVID-19 pandemic has shown on health care disparities, the health law professional is at the center, providing analysis, assessing risk, ensuring compliance, and making recommendations to their organizations and clients, ultimately leading to better health outcomes for all.  They are the stabilizing force within the industry and the American Health Law Association wants to celebrate and champion these professionals!

Health Law Week is about increasing awareness of this integrated and integral profession within the health care industry, highlighting programs that create new opportunities for entry into the profession, showcasing organizations/firms dedicated to employing these professionals, and elevating this community’s contributions to the health care industry. This is a celebration of the individual and magnification of the collective community.

Frequently Asked Questions

What prompted the Association to expand from AHLA Day to Health Law Week?
Originally, the Young Professionals Council began organizing periodic pop-up events/happy hours to bring young professionals together to discuss their work in health law, involvement in AHLA, and share how prospective members could join AHLA and get involved too. To better organize these efforts, AHLA Day was created, with four primary events coordinated by AHLA with sponsorship from firms and companies. The goal was to increase awareness and recruit young professionals and other prospective members into AHLA. The first AHLA Day was held in 2017.

Over the last several years on AHLA Day, other smaller events were also hosted and planned by various leaders and advertised along with the four primary events. Although attendance and engagement at these events have risen over the years, logistically, trying to fit all of these activities into one day has become cumbersome. It was time to reimagine the original concept, expand upon it, and reintroduce it as Health Law Week.

Is the theme changing as AHLA Day becomes Health Law Week?
AHLA Day was an opportunity for members to engage with colleagues by promoting their involvement in the Association, sharing why they belong and what they gain from that affiliation, while encouraging colleagues who had not yet joined AHLA to do so. This remains an underlying theme. In addition, Health Law Week is about increasing awareness of this integrated and integral profession within the health care industry, highlighting programs that create new opportunities for entry into the profession, showcasing organizations/firms dedicated to employing these professionals, and elevating this community’s contributions to the health care industry. This is a celebration of the individual and magnification of the collective community.

When is Health Law Week being held?
Health Law Week is being held virtually from June 21-27, 2021, in between AHLA's In-House Counsel Program and Annual Meeting

Will Health Law Week be held in June going forward?
Most likely not. AHLA originally planned to hold Health Law Week in April of 2020 but due to the pandemic it was canceled.  As we are still coping with the pandemic, we felt it was important to hold Health Law Week virtualy and this year it made sense to program the week between AHLA's In-House Counsel Program and Annual Meeting. However, as the country begins to reopen late 2021 and into 2022, we will reevaluate when Health Law Week will be held and hopefully add in-person networking events as originally planned.

How can I get involved with Health Law Week?
Plan to attend a Health Law Week event and invite a colleague or young professional to join you. There is no fee to attend any event and all events are open to the entire health law community. More information on can be found on the Schedule of Events page.
